Short fiber?reinforced oxide fiber composites

This paper presents a novel fiber spraying process for the manufacturing of short bundle-reinforced Nextel™ 610/Al2O3-ZrO2 oxide composites (SF-OFC) and its characterization. First, influence varying lengths (7, 14, 28 mm, continuous fibers) orientations (unidirectional 0°, quasi-isotropic, ±45°) was investigated using hand-laid SF-OFC. Due to weak matrix, material exhibited strongly fiber-dominated behavior, that is, variations in length orientation had strong on properties. Second, automated sprayed SF-OFC, however, random bundles, which resulted in-plane isotropic Average bending strengths up 177 MPa, strains .39%, quasi-ductile fracture behavior were achieved. The strain was, therefore, range fabric-reinforced OFC. While strength SF-OFC somewhat lower than OFC with parallel loading direction, it more two times higher 45° direction relative fabric reinforcement. Combined good drapability costs compared OFC, promising industrial applications.
